PIANO HYGIENE

It always amazes me that pianos which I have to tune often have filthy keys. When I encounter this I usually spend a little time cleaning them before I start so as to avoid cross-infection.

I admit that it is easier to clean the keys when they are exposed by moving the woodwork which prevents access to the full length of the key.

I use clear surgical spirits for cleaning but in some cases , particularly with older instruments, I have to be careful to avoid disturbing the polish on the black keys. Modern instruments use plastic for the black keys.

The Corrona virus can be transmitted amongst piano players and students and it is now more important than ever not only to clean the keys but to wash hands after playing.
