Answers to the questions Keith is asked most often about piano tuning, repairs, moving and appraisals in Cape Town. Can’t find your answer? Get in touch.
How much does piano tuning cost in Cape Town?
In 2026 a regular piano tuning costs R1,400 in the Southern Suburbs and R1,500 in the Northern Suburbs. A pitch raise, for pianos that haven’t been tuned regularly, costs R1,600 (Southern Suburbs) or R1,800 (Northern Suburbs). Prices exclude replacing strings that may break during a pitch raise and any time-consuming repairs or adjustments.
How often should my piano be tuned?
Piano manufacturers recommend tuning at least twice a year. Seasonal changes in humidity make the soundboard expand and contract, which changes the tension of the strings – so even a piano that isn’t played often goes out of tune.
How long does a piano tuning take?
A regular tuning takes about 1.5 hours. A pitch raise, for a piano that hasn’t been tuned in the last two years, takes about 2.5 to 3 hours.
What is a pitch raise, and do I need one?
If a piano hasn’t been tuned regularly, its strings drop well below the correct pitch. A pitch raise brings the whole piano back up to pitch before it is fine-tuned, which takes extra time and effort. Keith will tell you if your piano needs one before he starts.
Why do old pianos often cost more to tune?
Older pianos can need more time and care to tune well. Keith explains why in his article on the subject.
