Why Old Pianos Often Cost More to Tune
I am constantly being faced with old pianos that no longer have any musical value.
A young beginner should be playing on a well-tuned, fairly modern instrument that resembles the tonal and mechanical attributes of their teacher’s piano if they are expected to progress and enjoy playing the piano.
Often I am asked to quote for a piano tuning, without knowing the instrument’s age and condition as well as the area to which I have to travel. It takes time and effort to explain that it is impossible to give an exact price as each piano is different. Old pianos are handed down, generation after generation, with never any tuning or servicing. A piano requires continued maintenance irrespective of whether it is being used. Years of neglect can lead to problems arising, thereby increasing the cost of a routine tuning.
